Theatre Review: The Empire Strips Back at Riverside Studios
What do Star Wars, burlesque and Hammersmith have in common? Apparently, a surprisingly brilliant night out!
Part of this project is about stepping outside my usual theatre habits – taking chances on shows I know nothing about and exploring venues I’ve never been to. Riverside Studios in Hammersmith was one of them.
I’ve always wanted to check it out, especially since I recently moved to the borough (I’m keen to make the most of those local discounts!). So when I heard about The Empire Strips Back, it felt like the perfect excuse to finally head down there.
I was definitely not disappointed! The theatre is situated right opposite Hammersmith Bridge, and I enjoyed a brief moment of sunset before coming into the show.
I’ve got to admit, writing this review was a bit of a challenge for a non-fan like me. I’m not big on sci-fi, and I’m (VERY :() ashamed to say I haven’t managed to watch a single Star Wars film. That said, I do love a good burlesque show, so I suppose I’m still part of the target audience. Plus, I happen to know someone who is a sci-fi fan (wink), which made this an ideal date night for the two of us.
So, what exactly is The Empire Strips Back? Imagine Darth Vader in fishnets and stormtroopers doing synchronised striptease, and you're only halfway there. Originating in Australia, The Empire Strips Back is a loving and cheeky tribute that reimagines the galaxy far, far away through a hilarious immersive burlesque lens, packed with comedy, dance and jaw-dropping production. I wasn't too sure what the show was about at first – is it a Star Wars-related production? Is it an actual burlesque show? Let me tell you – it is DEFINITELY a burlesque show: risqué, sexy and very naughty!
It's important to note that because it follows the concept of a burlesque show, some avid theatre-goers might find it a bit confusing at first due to the lack of narrative and storytelling.
Nevertheless, each performance has its own charm and is very well choreographed, but my favourite is definitely Princess Leia's act. The performance is on the slower side, but it was very elegant and highlighted how talented the cast is. Jabba and Chewy are no doubt fan favourites as well. (Side note: the casting really stood out for its thoughtful and well-represented selection of performers.)
All the songs chosen were very poppy – with a lot of Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Backstreet Boys and AC/DC – which means everyone can have a good time without knowing too much about the actual storyline. My boyfriend did mention it was a pity they didn’t include more tracks from the original show (perhaps due to legal issues).
It is definitely worth sitting closer to the front, as you'd get more opportunity to interact with your favourite character. That said, the higher price range is definitely targeted towards fans, but any non-fan like me could still enjoy the show too!
All in all, it was the most fun I’ve had in a while, and I’d absolutely recommend it if you’re after a unique night out with your other half or friends.
No Star Wars knowledge? No problem. You’ll leave ready to join the fandom.
